I like to eat dates, walnuts and an energy drink (Nocco) before my training sessions, it gives me a good boost. Sometimes I bring a protein shake after my session but not all the time, as I said before, it all depends on my goal (off-season or competition-mode).

To handle cravings on prep I become a big proponent of flavored carbonated waters to help keep you full and give you that little sweet/sugary taste that many people want or need. I do not drink coffee or teas but I do drink REIGN energy drinks religiously.

So don’t fool yourself, alcohol is very tricky and caloric especially when combining with coke, isotonic drinks, lemonades or some other soft drinks. Especially dangerous with energy drinks. It won’t just make your heart rate elevated but it will make your body confused or suffer some bigger things like insomnia, crankiness, pass-outs or even death.

My supplements include whey/casein protein through Ascent, a basic multivitamin (just because I’m not quite disciplined enough to eat enough veggies although I do eat veggies at least a couple of timers per day), a fish oil (because again I don’t eat enough fish in my diet) and I do enjoy using caffeine. That means I enjoy the occasional diet soda or energy drink along with a five-hour energy type drink in the morning.

For caffeine, I use it daily, a lot, coffee and energy drinks everyday but no sugary drinks as I believe the combination is dangerous. I can drink 500mL of diet Red Bull and I got no problem, but with 250mL of sugar Redbull then my heart starts acting up, so I recommend everyone to stay away from sugary energy drinks!

I also don’t have many starch based carbs late at night. I do believe in the value of a high protein and less fat nutritional program. Gum and energy drinks help me handle hunger cravings.
